Gastrogastric Fistulas
Gastrogastric fistulas, an unintended connection between the proximal gastric pouch and the remaining stomach, occur in up to 6% of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass cases.
Leakage of ingested food through the fistula may allow the proximal pouch to empty faster, leading to increased volume of meals and increased appetite. Patients stop losing weight or begin regaining weight.23 Surgical intervention is often necessary to correct the fistula.24
